How are your Congressional representatives doing?
Most of vote for the person we think will do the best job, then pretty much ignore what they’re doing. We read headlines, but don’t check in with our reps to see what they’re thinking or how they’re voting.
I get it, I’m not pinging my reps every week, either.
But this attitude is not optimal for our democracy.
Because of the state of American politics, it takes an obscene amount of money to successfully run for office. Naturally, this makes elected officials inclined to pay attention to big donors then the folks who actually elect them.
But on election day, we count votes, not dollars, and elected officials know that, too.
There are two solutions to the problem of unresponsive representatives.
First, we need to watch them and we need to LET THEM KNOW we are watching them. (See below for ways to contact your elected officials.)
Second, we need to work to inform voters and get out the vote. There are a variety of ways to do that, but the gold standard is canvassing, knocking on doors and talking to voters.
